Era of Distances

When I initially thought about the topic the world was different. I wanted to have a take on growing distances among people while we upgrade ourselves with technology shrinking the world. But, then we started learning and implementing a new word ‘social distancing’. Now things changed completely. We were in a state where we came closer to our loved ones while distancing ourselves from the mundane race of life. I always use to wonder that with our lives becoming more virtual; we were somehow losing our touch with reality.

  •   We were always looking forward to making our socials beautiful, without giving much thought to our life.
  •   We were running to keep up with the standards set up by our surroundings.
  • We were losing the sense of self while creating a false image for the world.
But, as boring, taxing or hard it seems social distancing changed the dynamics of our lives. We were forced to restrict our moments and stay indoors.

Funny enough the technology which a few months ago was a source of creating a distance in relationships, realities and overall humanity suddenly turned into a blessing.

  •  It became a source of catching with old lost friends with video calls being a big part of our routine.
  •    We started taking recipes tips from each other or YouTube to create meals with love for  our loved ones
  •  Reading, writing, painting and all the other forms of art became our source of happiness and made us calm.
  •  We started working towards our hobbies or exploring a new one by taking classes online
  •  We started watching movies together or watching reruns of old television series together or playing online games together.
  •   The family groups suddenly started turning into fun groups with nostalgia being shared with conversations or old photographs.
  •     We now had time to take part in all the challenges thrown at us to make the quarantine time a fun one, without worrying much about work (though we are still working and completing deadlines  😉 )
We have started looking more towards inside to fight the negativity of outside.
Elder people in our house are filled with joy as the families are spending time together, we have started taking initiative to actually listen to each other, started understanding and have overall became more compassionate towards each other.

This distancing has actually bought us close to people we love, it has also made us realize that life is too fragile to be wasted on ego, fights, competition or jealousy.

The era of distancing is actually becoming a step towards dearness, a way to reconnect a source to make us aware that life is not for merely existing but for living. While nature is healing outside, we are on the other hand; are healing inside. So let us make the best use of being socially distant and emotionally closer to all those we value in life because when all this will be over we will come out as humans who entered into this phase as a machine.

"In stillness lives wisdom. In the quiet, you’ll find peace. And, in solitude, you’ll remember yourself."

  1. Yes, somehow all this social media has been a boon in such times...
Although I still believe that the virtual world is just a make belief world... And somehow these days people have stopped being responsive in virtual world too... Barring the lock down times of course...

  2. The more technology brings us closer, the far we seem to go away from one another.
